ComedySportz National Tournament 1998

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 29 - August 1, 1998

19 ComedySportz teams from across the US competed for laughs, points and the Championship of the Known World, aka the Meaningless Cup.

Matches took place in both Milwaukee CSz venues, the 220-seat Henry J Kalt Arena and the 80-seat RSVP room. Most of the shows sold out; the exceptions were Saturday matinees. Highlights were many, with new games and variations of old standards alike.  CSz Richmond made a credible tournament debut as the CLA's newest team.

Player workshops dominated the daytime scene, including a special workshop led by Pauls Sills, one of the icons of improvisation. CSz teachers included veterans Dick Chudnow, Jeff Kramer, Mike Rock, Patrick Walsh, James Bailey, Dave Gaudet and Bryan Judkins.

Host Milwaukee answered a challenge from the Comedy League of America Managers and sent a 10 player team onto the field against Team America, an all-star ensemble comprised of one player from each of the other 18 teams.   CSz Founder Dick "Tuna" Chudnow coached Milwaukee, while 13-year veteran Patrick "Wiseguy" Walsh (Washington DC) led Team America. The match was a tour de force, from the opening coin-toss "Machine" to the final "Yard Sale" variation of Object Tag with all 28 players. Although Milwaukee staged a furious comeback in the final two rounds, Team America held on to win 26-24.

Portland player Kasey "Extra" Christie shares his tournament impressions at the Portland website.

The 1999 CLA Tournament will be held in Portland, Oregon.  Austin, Texas is the host for 2000.
