1999 National
Tournament

The Oregon Donors are the 1999 National Champions, beating Team America 25-24 for the Meaningless Cup in the finals of the 1999 ComedySportz National Tournament, presented by the Oregonian, a Benefit for the Oregon Food Bank, on August 5-7, 1999.

Host Portland answered a challenge from the Comedy League of America managers and sent a 10-player team onto the field against Team America, an all-star ensemble comprised of one player from each of the other 18 teams. CSz Founder Dick "Tuna" Chudnow coached Team America, while Kent "the winner within" McCarty (Portland) led the Oregon Donors. The match was a tour de force, from the opening coin-toss "Machine" to the final "Freeze Tag" that ended with group hug of all 28 players on the field which was in context and was an appropriate symbolic gesture to cap the week. Although Team America staged a furious comeback, the Oregon Donors held on to win 25-24. The Oregon Donors are the 1999 ComedySportz National Champion of the Comedy League of America.

19 ComedySportz teams from across the U.S. competed for laughs, points and the Championship of the Known World, a.k.a. the Meaningless Cup. Matches took place at the Newmark Theatre in the Portland Center for Performing Arts (PCPA) in downtown Portland, Oregon. This refined and elegant 800+ seat theater was designed to emulate the Edwardian-style theaters of Europe. It was nearly a perfect venue for the National ComedySportz Tournament of the Comedy League of America. The Championship Match on Saturday (August 7) night was performed before the largest crowd to ever see a ComedySportz Tournament Match (nearly 750).

Attendance for the entire 3 days of matches was over 3700; including the August 3rd performance of the Impromptones, total attendance for the event exceeded 4000.

Sponsors included The Oregonian / Edge, Widmer Brothers Brewing Co, NewsTalk 750 KXL, LazerQuick, London Catering, Invision Exhibits, MicroAccounting Systems, The Goldsmith Company, Portland/Gresham Food4Less and Culligan Water.
